The Brief
This redeveloped 4-storey property in a suburb of Essex was completed by KNX UK Integrator member IndigoZest in 2020. Their client was a property developer who approached them to design and install the smart home solution, having visited one of their showrooms.
He came to them early in the build process with a unique lighting design he had created to showcase the beauty of the building, featuring colour changing LED’s in several locations including the kitchen and pool areas. The lighting design was a signature feature that was intended to give the property wow-factor and the appeal he wanted for prospective buyers.
The sheer size of the property, which comprised of six bedrooms, bar, home cinema, gym and a sauna and steam room among the rooms, meant that a control system packed with smart automation was essential for the running of the home.
“We often specify KNX for the control of a clients BMS (business management system) in project such as this one, as we find KNX as a standard very robust and versatile compared to other systems. Usually with a lot of other lighting control systems there can be elements within the BMS that you can’t integrate with or control, whereas with KNX we always find a product that can do the job. This means that all elements of the BMS can become part of the smart home system, rather than just a few, which results in a much more seamless experience for our clients.”
The Solution
The team at IndigoZest proposed a KNX backbone for the control system, as they knew this would provide the flexibility and reliability to integrate multiple technologies and products into one easily manageable system.
The control system encompassed internal and external lighting control, indoor and outdoor audio with multi zoned amplifiers and in-ceiling speakers, a centrally locate video system, automated blinds, a cinema room with automated lighting, a robust and reliable network and Wi-Fi system and room specific heating and cooling with energy saving room occupancy settings.
The KNX control system was integrated with Control4 to provide the flexibility to integrate all the technologies specified by the client, into one simple to use interface.
The Result
The main objective of the brief was to create wow factor for this highly sought after home. The lighting design with colour changing scenes controlled by KNX accomplishes this as soon as you enter the property.
The wow-factor that isn’t so obvious to the naked eye is the ease with which this expansive family home can be controlled using subtle touchscreens and mobile phone apps.
