Built to Evolve: AVINU’s Winning Take on KNX Longevity
Congratulations to KNX UK member AVINU and Managing Director Darryl Roberts, whose recent post saw AVINU named the UK winner of the KNX Global ETS6.4 Roadshow Challenge.
The challenge invited members to share their own experiences of KNX and ETS, and Darryl chose to focus on something that can sometimes be overlooked in a technology sector constantly looking towards the next new development: longevity.
Drawing on more than 16 years of experience at AVINU, Darryl highlighted the evolution of ETS from a commissioning tool into the comprehensive engineering platform his team uses throughout the lifecycle of its projects – from programming and commissioning through to maintenance, diagnostics and future expansion. see Darryl’s post
It is an observation that neatly captures one of the great strengths of KNX. Future-ready technology doesn’t simply mean replacing what went before with something newer. It means creating an infrastructure capable of evolving while protecting the investment already made in it.
ETS itself provides a striking example. The first version was released in 1993, yet today’s ETS maintains backwards compatibility across some 35 years of KNX devices. At the same time, continuing development has brought improvements in areas including project handling, diagnostics, security and commissioning efficiency. (KNX)

KNX has been developed over decades, but its open, manufacturer-independent approach means installations can continue to evolve as new products, functions and technologies emerge. Rigorous certification, interoperability and the ability to expand or reconfigure systems without starting again all contribute to its reputation as a robust, adaptable platform for long-term building control.
